Kaua'i Service Trip

Background

In April of 2018, the small Hawaiian Island of Kaua’i was devastated by rain storms and flooding. Between April 14th and 15th, the island received 49.7 inches of rainfall. Streets and bridges had collapsed, farms and gardens were ruined, and all sense of hope was lost within the community. I had to opportunity to travel with a group of students to the Island in hopes of restoring what the storms had taken from thousands of native citizens.

Responsibilities:

  • Rebuild a bridge that connected Tunnels Beach with the rest of the island.
  • Rebuild boat ramps at the Hanalei Canoe Club.
  • Remove invasive plant species that the floods brought in at the Limahuli Gardens on the North Shore.
